Giant Wave Incident at Tenerife Port: Cruise Ship Passengers Caught in a Scary Situation
A serious maritime incident occurred on November 8, 2025, at Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, when a large wave unexpectedly crashed onto the seafront promenade, resulting in one fatality and numerous injuries.
Emergency services reported that a group of tourists, including cruise ship passengers, had gathered near the pier to watch the turbulent sea when the wave struck, dragging several individuals into the water. Sebastián Quintana, a local maritime safety official, characterized the event as one of the most severe coastal accidents in recent history. He highlighted that the onlookers were on the promenade, not in the sea, when the swell caught them by surprise, despite a coastal red alert being in effect.
Rescue teams acted quickly, managing to recover all individuals affected by the surge. Ten people were injured in total, with three sustaining serious injuries. Among the victims, some were identified as foreign tourists who had just arrived that morning on a cruise ship docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the day.
A deceased individual, believed to be a Dutch national, was found in cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite immediate emergency assistance.
At the time of the incident, the Canary Islands were experiencing severe weather conditions, with wave heights reported to reach up to 15 feet in various areas.
Authorities have initiated an investigation and issued warnings for both residents and visitors to steer clear of coastal walkways under adverse marine conditions.
On the day of the incident, four cruise ships—Silver Dawn, Azura, Mein Schiff 3, and Sky Princess—were docked at Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
