Thessaloniki Port Authority Launches Expansion Project for Pier 6
The Thessaloniki Port Authority S.A. (ThPA S.A.) has initiated the long-anticipated expansion of Pier 6 by executing a construction contract with the METKA S.A. – TEKAL S.A. joint venture. This landmark agreement is marked by the signatures of ThPA S.A.’s CEO and senior officials from the involved partners. The expansion is deemed crucial under the port’s concession agreement.
The Pier 6 expansion project entails extending the pier by 513 meters and constructing a 306.5-meter-wide platform, with significant dredging of the navigation channel and maneuvering areas included. These modifications will enable the safe berthing of Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The project is budgeted at EUR 195.6 million and has a 40-month timeline for completion.
Once finished, Thessaloniki’s port will significantly increase its capacity, allowing it to handle over 1.5 million TEUs annually, up from the current 650,000 TEUs, thus enhancing its competitiveness in Southeast European trade routes. Additionally, the project is anticipated to have a positive socio-economic impact locally and nationally throughout its construction and operational phases.
Funding will be managed through ThPA S.A.’s existing resources and additional banking facilities.
