Thessaloniki Port Authority Launches Expansion Project for Pier 6
Thessaloniki Port Authority has signed a contract with the METKA S.A. – TEKAL S.A. Joint Venture to embark on a significant expansion project for Pier 6, marking a milestone in the port’s infrastructure development. This expansion is a requirement of the port’s concession agreement and includes adding an additional 513 meters to Pier 6, along with a wide platform and dredging activities to improve the navigation channel and maneuvering space for larger vessels.
This project aims to enhance the port’s capabilities to accommodate Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) with capacities up to 24,000 TEUs, significantly increasing the container terminal’s capacity from 650,000 TEUs to 1.5 million TEUs annually. The total budget for this ambitious initiative is set at EUR 195.6 million, with a projected completion timeline of 40 months.
The expansion is expected to have a profound socio-economic impact on both local and national levels, improving the port’s competitiveness along Southeast European trade routes. Funding for the project will draw from ThPA S.A.’s existing capital resources and new banking facilities.
