Thessaloniki Port Authority Launches Expansion Project for Pier 6
The Thessaloniki Port Authority has officially signed a construction contract with the METKA S.A. – TEKAL S.A. Joint Venture to expand Pier 6, marking a significant enhancement in the port’s infrastructure. This project is a crucial requirement of the port’s concession agreement and involves extending Pier 6 by 513 meters, creating a 306.5-meter-wide platform, and conducting extensive dredging in the navigation channel and maneuvering area. These improvements are intended to facilitate the safe docking of Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
With a budget of EUR 195.6 million and a projected completion timeline of 40 months, the expansion will enable the Port of Thessaloniki to accommodate more container vessels, including ULCVs with a capacity of up to 24,000 TEUs. This advancement will increase the annual capacity of the container terminal from 650,000 TEUs to 1.5 million TEUs, significantly enhancing its competitive edge in Southeast European trade routes. The project is expected to have a notable socio-economic impact on both local and national levels during its construction and operational phases.
Funding for the expansion will be derived from the port authority’s existing capital and forthcoming banking arrangements.
