Century Star’s Danube Deployment: A New Era in European River Cruising Begins

Budapest, Vienna, and Bratislava are gearing up for new opportunities in the upscale river cruise sector as Century Cruises from China announces its entry into the European market with the debut of MS Century Star. This one-of-a-kind vessel, custom-built for river cruising, is slated to commence operations on the Danube in September 2026, featuring Chinese hospitality and design.

The ship measures nearly 135 meters and accommodates 174 passengers in 78 cabins, providing a luxurious cruising experience that harmonizes Eastern and Western aesthetics. Its launch is anticipated to boost tourism along the UNESCO-listed river, enhancing local economies with increased visitor spending. The hybrid propulsion system and eco-friendly features set a new standard for sustainability in river cruising.

The inaugural journey features an eight-day itinerary that starts in Budapest on September 18, 2026. Passengers will explore key cities such as Esztergom, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz, and Passau, highlighting the rich architectural, cultural, and musical heritage along the route. Efficient port-to-shore transfers via dedicated coaches will allow guests extended time ashore, benefiting local businesses and attractions.

Vienna is expected to receive longer visits, enabling tourists to immerse themselves in the city’s cultural spots, imperial landmarks, and traditional cafés, thus bolstering the local economy. Passengers will experience culinary offerings that showcase regional European traditions, all while enjoying direct access to the city thanks to prime riverfront berthing.

Bratislava will attract smaller groups interested in manageable half-day excursions, matching the ship’s limited capacity to the city’s scale. This strategy will support local businesses, including boutique hotels and independent restaurants, taking advantage of its proximity to Vienna for extended stay options.

The environmentally conscious design of the Century Star, which includes a hull made from recycled steel and a hybrid propulsion system, is in line with EU net-zero objectives. These eco-friendly initiatives aim to minimize the ship’s impact on sensitive areas like the Wachau Valley, appealing to eco-aware passengers while helping to modernize port infrastructure.

Following its initial operations on the Danube, Century Star will expand to the Rhine, offering itineraries between Amsterdam and Basel starting November 6, 2026. This dual-river strategy is expected to diversify tourism across the two regions, attracting new visitors to less-traveled ports.

Century Cruises, with decades of experience on China’s Yangtze River, plans to bring its seasoned service practices to Europe, incorporating expansive lounges and Asian-inspired designs unique from established cruise lines. Customized excursions will blend local cultural experiences with wellness initiatives familiar to those who sailed on the Yangtze.

Ports like Linz and Passau stand to benefit as well, offering unique industrial and cultural attractions. Meanwhile, Esztergom will operate as a spiritual destination, encouraging small group excursions aligned with the ship’s visitor capacity.

With a maximum of 174 passengers, the Century Star targets high-yield markets, promising increased spending on experiences, dining, and shopping while alleviating pressures on local infrastructure caused by larger cruise vessels. This strategy is set to maintain seasonal steadiness in employment and economic activity along the river.

Looking ahead, Century Cruises is considering expanding operations to the Nile, indicating an intent to grow its international portfolio through strategic collaboration with various ports. The long-term economic outlook suggests that the Century Star will significantly contribute to the local economy through direct spending and taxation, aiding in heritage conservation and sustainable development initiatives. Early reservations show robust interest, highlighting Budapest, Vienna, and Bratislava as emerging hotspots in the luxury river cruise market.
