Havila Polaris Sets Sail on Coastal Ferry Cruise with Groundbreaking First Biogas Bunkering
The coastal ferry Havila Polaris has successfully completed its first significant intake of liquefied biogas, receiving 200 cubic meters of the eco-friendly fuel from Barents Naturgass at Polarbase in Hammerfest, Norway. This event marks the start of what the company refers to as a groundbreaking voyage, slated to reduce overall CO₂ emissions by over 90%, highlighting the potential for lower-emission coastal shipping using existing vessel technology.
During its upcoming round trip along the Norwegian coastline, Havila Polaris is expected to take on a total of 350 cubic meters of liquefied biogas. The initial supply was delivered in Hammerfest on November 26, with the remaining volume topped off in Bergen by Molgas Energy on November 30.
Bent Martini, the chief executive of Havila Voyages, emphasized that this operation is a significant milestone for the company. He noted that this voyage showcases the feasibility of achieving very low emissions on coastal routes without necessitating modifications to the vessels.
