Helsingor Port Joins the Cruise Europe Alliance: A New Chapter for Danish Tourism
Helsingor Port, located in Denmark and known for its UNESCO-listed Kronborg Castle, has recently joined Cruise Europe. The port combines rich historical significance with modern Scandinavian design, featuring a compact downtown that’s easy to explore and close to major attractions in North Zealand.
Helsingor is equipped for tender operations with a sheltered anchorage offering depths over 20 meters, accommodating vessels of all sizes. The floating tender pier is compliant with ISPS regulations and can facilitate the transfer of passengers via four tender boats at once. Transferring passengers to the historic center, where they can enjoy views of Kronborg Castle, takes only five to ten minutes.
For ships measuring up to 150 meters, alongside docking is available at Royal Quay, along with essential services like fresh water and waste disposal. The port benefits from protection against severe weather and features minimal tidal variation. Pilotage and tug assistance, although available, are not compulsory.
A new "Lite Call" concept has been introduced at Helsingor to streamline operations for cruise lines. This allows ships to anchor in Helsingor, tender passengers to shore, and then proceed without re-embarking, or alternatively, they can dock in Copenhagen first, with passengers transported by bus or train to Helsingor for short visits. Lite Calls operate under a reduced port fee for a maximum duration of three hours, allowing limited embarkation or disembarkation.
This concept emphasizes Helsingor’s strategic location near Copenhagen, facilitating the incorporation of the historical town into cruise itineraries and enhancing passenger experiences. Upon arrival, tourists receive information and maps, enabling immediate exploration of local sites, including the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark and Frederiksborg Castle, with other attractions nearby.
After hosting only 2 to 3 cruise ship calls annually in recent years, Helsingor is looking to increase its cruise traffic by joining Cruise Europe and appointing Mathias Monrad Bruun as Cruise Manager. This move aims to further develop the port’s offerings and strengthen its position in Northern European cruise journeys.
