Pioneering Biofuel Bunkering: Norwegian Viva Successfully Refuels in Piraeus
The U.S.-based energy company World Fuel Services (WFS), a division of World Kinect, successfully conducted a pioneering biofuel bunkering operation for the Norwegian Viva at the port of Piraeus, Greece. This initiative was a collaborative effort with the Greek supplier EKO and involved supplying a marine-fuel blend derived from waste. This event is noteworthy as it stands as one of the first commercial biofuel bunkering for a cruise ship in Greece.
This delivery is part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ broader biofuel program within Southern Europe, aligned with its environmental initiative, Sail & Sustain. The collaboration also emphasizes WFS’s ability to provide ship operators access to certified sustainable fuels globally.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has previously engaged in biofuel initiatives across Europe, conducting trials in locations such as Gibraltar, Copenhagen, and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp area, along with an earlier biofuel delivery in Piraeus.
World Fuel Services is headquartered in Miami, Florida, and operates through its Marine, Aviation, and World Kinect divisions, offering a range of services, including fuel distribution and renewable energy solutions, to diverse clients worldwide.
