Norwegian Viva Leads the Way in Biofuel Bunkering with Successful Refueling in Piraeus

The U.S.-based energy company World Fuel Services (WFS), part of World Kinect, recently facilitated a pioneering biofuel bunkering for the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) vessel, Norwegian Viva, at the port of Piraeus, Greece. This operation, in collaboration with Greek supplier EKO, involved the delivery of a marine fuel blend made from waste-based biofuel, marking it as one of Greece’s earliest commercial biofuel bunkering initiatives for cruise vessels.

This delivery is part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ broader biofuel program, which extends throughout Southern Europe, aligning with their environmental initiative, Sail & Sustain. It also showcases WFS’s ability to connect ship operators with certified sustainable fuels globally.

This biofuel operation builds on previous activities by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in Europe, including trials conducted in Gibraltar, Copenhagen, and the Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp region, along with earlier biofuel deliveries in Piraeus.

World Fuel Services, headquartered in Miami, Florida, is a global energy management company that offers fuel distribution, operational services, and renewable energy solutions to commercial and institutional clients worldwide.
