Record-Breaking 2025 Cruise Season: Exploring the Wonders of Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador has concluded a record-setting cruise season for 2025, as reported by Cruise Newfoundland & Labrador. The season, which ran from January 16 to October 22, marked the longest duration in the region’s history and highlighted its burgeoning status as a prime cruise destination.

During this remarkable season, Newfoundland and Labrador’s ports accommodated a variety of ships, including those from contemporary, expedition, and luxury lines, spanning routes through Canada, New England, and the Arctic. Over 180 vessel calls were recorded across 24 different destinations, including 22 visits to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, which brought approximately 100,000 passengers and over 40,000 crew members ashore.

This influx of visitors significantly benefited local businesses, impacting urban centers, rural areas, and remote coastal communities alike. Katelyn Budgell, managing director of Cruise Newfoundland & Labrador, emphasized the importance of this sector, stating, "Cruise continues to be an important driver of economic activity for communities across Newfoundland and Labrador."

Significant activity within the Port of St. John’s included nine inaugural visits, eight turnarounds, and several overnight stays, which allowed guests to immerse themselves in the region and reaffirmed St. John’s position as a vital access point for visitors seeking a quality experience.

The season also brought notable success to Corner Brook, which welcomed several ships for their inaugural visits, further supporting local tourism and hospitality industries. Glenda Simms, supervisor of tourism for Corner Brook, expressed pride in hosting the area’s first-ever winter cruise, allowing even more visitors to experience the region’s offerings.

Additionally, the 2025 cruise season showcased the province’s first winter cruise operations and welcomed increased ship calls in St. Anthony. Two new ports, Trinity and Bonavista, were also certified to enhance cruise accessibility. A standout feature was the introduction of a province-wide circumnavigation itinerary with Adventure Canada, covering 15 destinations.

To facilitate smoother operations, a remote digital clearance pilot program was introduced, enabling streamlined vessel clearance and greater access for cruises to northern and remote communities.

As the demand for visits to Newfoundland and Labrador continues to grow, the association has begun receiving confirmed and prospective bookings that stretch into 2026, 2027, and 2028.
