Tragedy on the Nile: Cruise Collision Claims a Life
A tragic incident involving two cruise ships occurred on the Nile near Luxor, resulting in the death of a 47-year-old Italian woman named Denise Ruggeri. Reports indicate that she suffered a severe lung injury after falling in her cabin during the collision. Despite emergency rescue efforts, Denise did not survive. Originally from the small town of Cagnano Amiterno, in the province of L’Aquila, she was on vacation with her husband and worked as a teacher in a local school in Pizzoli.
The collision happened around 7 PM local time when the Royal Beau Rivage, which had many Italian passengers, struck another vessel approximately 30 kilometers from Luxor. The crash resulted in significant damage, destroying four cabins on the Royal boat. Officials from the Italian consulate swiftly contacted Denise’s husband and other tour operators who were assisting the affected passengers.
Italian Ambassador to Cairo, Agostino Palese, confirmed no additional Italian nationals were reported harmed in the incident. This is not the first dangerous event involving Nile cruises; previous incidents include a fire on a boat carrying Italians last October and a drowning event related to a ferry in April that claimed six lives. The Nile has a history of accidents, including a 2013 sinking of a cruise ship with 112 passengers near Aswan, from which all passengers were rescued thanks to timely action from local authorities.
