Coast Guard Calls Off Search for 77-Year-Old Woman Lost at Sea from Holland America Line Cruise Ship

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a 77-year-old woman who went overboard from the Holland America Line cruise ship, Nieuw Statendam, on New Year’s Day near Cuba. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reported missing about 40 miles northeast of the Sabana-Camagüey archipelago.

The Coast Guard stated that its crews searched the area for approximately eight hours over a span of 690 square miles but were unable to locate her. In a post on social media, they indicated that the search would be on hold until further information may arise.

A representative from Holland America Line confirmed the incident, expressing their sorrow at the disappearance. The captain and crew conducted search and rescue operations in cooperation with the Coast Guard, which included the deployment of a cutter and helicopter from Air Station Clearwater.

After searching for a full day, the Coast Guard and cruise ship personnel decided to suspend the search efforts as daylight faded. The planned stop at Key West, Florida, for January 2 was canceled as a result of this incident. The ship is capable of accommodating around 2,700 passengers, having embarked from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on December 27, with prior stops in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Dominican Republic.
