56-Year-Old Woman MedEvaced from MSC Orchestra in Gulf of Asinara: A Life-Saving Rescue at Sea

A 56-year-old Peruvian woman was evacuated from the MSC Orchestra following a cerebrovascular stroke while the ship was traveling through the Gulf of Asinara on December 31st. The incident occurred at approximately 06:30 a.m., around 50 nautical miles away from Porto Torres, Italy.

After a medical alert was raised, the local Port Authority collaborated with the national Operations Center in Rome and the ship’s officers to initiate emergency procedures. Consulting with the ship’s doctor and the International Radio-Medical Center in Rome revealed that the passenger required immediate medical attention ashore. The Coast Guard directed the MSC Orchestra to navigate toward a safer area in the Gulf of Asinara where sea conditions were calmer to facilitate the evacuation.

A Coast Guard search-and-rescue vessel arrived on the scene around 09:50 a.m., five nautical miles from Porto Torres, retrieving the passenger without incident. By 10:25 a.m., the woman was brought to Porto Torres Port Authority’s pier and was received by Italy’s 118 emergency medical service, which transported her to a hospital in Sassari for further treatment.

Once the evacuation was successfully completed, the MSC Orchestra was cleared to continue its journey to Valencia.
