Emergency Medivac: Three Passengers Airlifted from Mein Schiff 3 Near Madeira
Three passengers aboard the cruise ship Mein Schiff 3 required urgent medical evacuation while the vessel was approximately 38 nautical miles south of the Port of Funchal, Madeira on the night of January 1, 2026.
Maritime authorities reported that a request was made for the evacuation of these passengers, prompting a swift response from the Search and Rescue Coordination Center. Rescue units were dispatched immediately, which included a craft from the Funchal Lifesaving Station and support from a SANAS Madeira vessel.
The operation was conducted safely, with the ship’s medical officer accompanying the passengers during the transfer. Upon reaching shore, the passengers were greeted by a Rapid Intervention Medical Team and then transported to a local hospital via two ambulances. Coordination and follow-up were managed by the local Maritime Police Command.
Details regarding the specific medical issues that led to the evacuation were not disclosed. At the time of the incident, Mein Schiff 3 was engaged in a 24-day round-trip cruise from Bremerhaven to the Canary Islands, designed for the New Year holiday period.
