Norovirus Outbreak: Gastrointestinal Illness Reported on Celebrity Eclipse Ship
An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness occurred on the Celebrity Eclipse during a cruise from December 20 to December 28, 2025. Out of the 3,042 passengers aboard, 95 reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Additionally, nine crew members were affected.
The eight-day voyage included stops in Fort Lauderdale, St. John’s in Antigua, Philipsburg in St. Maarten, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Puerto Plata at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, before returning to Florida. The situation was reported to the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program on the last day of the cruise.
While the exact cause of the outbreak was not determined at the time of the report, the ship’s operator took immediate action to enhance cleaning and disinfection protocols. They coordinated with the CDC on sanitation measures and collected stool samples from affected individuals for analysis.
In total, the CDC recorded 22 cruise ship illness outbreaks in 2025, primarily caused by norovirus. Before this incident, AIDAdiva experienced a virus outbreak during its lengthy world cruise that visited multiple global ports.
