Search Efforts Halted After 77-Year-Old Passenger Goes Overboard from HAL’s Nieuw Statendam

A search and rescue operation was launched after a 77-year-old woman fell overboard from Holland America Line’s ship, Nieuw Statendam. The incident took place while the vessel was navigating approximately 40 nautical miles northeast of Sabana, Cuba. Following the report, the ship’s crew initiated onboard search procedures in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard, which dispatched both a cutter and a helicopter to assist in the rescue efforts.

Unfortunately, after approximately eight hours of searching across 690 square miles, the U.S. Coast Guard decided to suspend the search when no new leads were discovered.

Nieuw Statendam had embarked on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale on December 27. Due to the search operation, the ship was unable to make its planned stop in Key West, Florida.

Holland America Line has confirmed the events and ensuring that its family assistance team is providing support to the woman’s family during this difficult time. The cruise line emphasized its commitment to assisting those affected while fully cooperating with the authorities involved.

For further details related to incidents involving Nieuw Statendam, more information can be found on the ship’s CruiseMinus page.
