Bahamas Unveils Plans for New Cruise Port in Mayaguana: What to Expect
The Bahamas government has announced plans to enhance the island of Mayaguana with a new cruise port and terminal. This initiative, part of a public-private partnership, aims to improve the island’s infrastructure and position Mayaguana as a key player in cruise activity and regional trade.
The project will unfold in three phases. The first phase involves the construction of a temporary marine offloading facility and a deep-water port. The subsequent phase will establish a new cruise terminal, followed by a third phase that will see the development of an additional port and upgrades to accommodate larger ships, along with associated land developments.
The government has partnered with Global Lead Consultant Group Limited for this initiative, which is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs upon completion. The project is strategically positioned near major shipping routes, making Mayaguana an ideal stop for vessels traveling from North America to destinations such as the Panama Canal, South America, and Europe.
Further details regarding the project’s specifications and timeline will be revealed as plans are finalized. The involvement of the Mayaguana Island Development Fund is set to ensure that the funds raised will benefit the local community directly and that the community will be engaged in decisions about those funds.
