Outbreak Alert: 89 Norovirus Cases Confirmed on Holland America’s ms Rotterdam
A recent voyage aboard Holland America’s ms Rotterdam has been marred by a norovirus outbreak, affecting nearly 90 individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that among the 2,593 passengers, 81 experienced symptoms associated with the virus, along with 8 crew members. The primary indicators were diarrhea and vomiting.
The affected cruise ran from December 28 to January 9, departing from Fort Lauderdale and stopping at various Caribbean ports, including Curaçao, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.
Holland America informed that the majority of the cases were mild and resolved quickly. Following the ship’s return to Fort Lauderdale, the company conducted a thorough sanitization in accordance with CDC procedures, prioritizing the well-being of both passengers and crew.
In 2025, the CDC documented 23 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships that warranted public notification, with norovirus being the cause in 17 of those cases. This trend reflects the ongoing prevalence of norovirus in cruise operations, as it was responsible for a similar proportion of outbreaks in previous years.
