Ponant Expands Presence in French Polynesia with Deployment of Second Vessel
Ponant Explorations Group is set to increase its cruise offerings in French Polynesia by launching two ships in late 2026 and into 2027. This expansion follows over 25 years of service with the m/s Paul Gauguin and aims to introduce the Le Jacques Cartier to enhance the variety of itineraries available.
The new voyages will navigate beyond the popular tourist destinations, reaching the Society Islands, Tuamotu, Austral, Gambier, and Marquesas archipelagos, as well as the remote Pitcairn Islands. This initiative is designed to facilitate more in-depth exploration of less-accessible areas, bringing attention to local communities and cultural experiences.
Passenger engagement will be a focal point of the new itineraries, featuring activities like traditional welcome ceremonies, workshops with local artisans, and visits to spiritually significant landmarks. The Paul Gauguin will maintain its well-established role in the region, emphasizing longer port stays and culturally-rich programs.
Le Jacques Cartier is set to embark on three expedition-style discovery itineraries that can be combined for an extended journey of up to 42 nights, covering six archipelagos and 23 islands. Ponant’s expedition planning crew has prioritized collaboration with local communities to curate itineraries that highlight natural, cultural, and environmental sites not typically included in conventional cruise routes.
