Bahamian Government Supports New Cruise and Cargo Port Development in Mayaguana

Plans are in motion for a new cruise port on Mayaguana, one of the lesser-developed islands in the Bahamas, located about 350 miles (560 km) southeast of Nassau. Known for its pristine environment and limited infrastructure, Mayaguana has been selected for a project designed to facilitate both cruise and cargo shipping.

The Bahamian government has announced a partnership with private developers to help launch the project, which will unfold in three phases. The initial phase involves constructing a deep-water port along with a temporary marine offloading facility to kickstart maritime operations.

In the subsequent phase, a dedicated cruise terminal will be established, enabling Mayaguana to accommodate visiting passenger vessels. The final phase aims to further enhance the facility by adding a deep-water transshipment port and the necessary infrastructure to handle larger ships.

Situated northwest of the Turks and Caicos, Mayaguana is recognized as the least developed island in the Bahamian archipelago. In this venture, the government will have an ownership stake in the port, collaborating with the locally based Mayaguana Island Development Fund and Global Lead Consultant Group Ltd. However, no specific timeline for the start of cruise operations has been provided yet.
