Connemara Mechanical Issues Cause Overcapacity on Bluebridge Ferries’ Livia Service
Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries recently experienced an overbooking situation on their ferry Livia, leading to the disembarkation of up to 36 passengers on January 11th. This incident occurred as the company attempted to accommodate passengers displaced from canceled sailings of their other vessel, Connemara.
The overcapacity issue arose when standby passengers were inadvertently accepted onto Livia’s afternoon service due to ongoing disruptions in the scheduling caused by mechanical problems on Connemara. When the capacity situation became apparent, those affected were asked to return to the shore. Bluebridge Ferries assured that they worked diligently to rebook travel for the stranded passengers and provided compensation for their costs, thanking them for their understanding.
This disruption followed a series of operational challenges due to mechanical failures on Connemara. The ferry had been out of service since Thursday due to repairs on a winch associated with its stern door, which had previously malfunctioned, leaving approximately 200 passengers stuck onboard for nearly 15 hours. To relieve some of the capacity pressures, Livia added extra sailings on Saturday.
Bluebridge is optimistic about the repairs on Connemara, which are progressing as expected, with plans for it to return to normal operations for its scheduled evening departure. The vessel is expected to resume regular sailings starting at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
