Ponant Announces Deployment of Two Cruise Ships in French Polynesia for 2026-2027

Ponant Explorations Group is enhancing its presence in French Polynesia by deploying two cruise ships during the 2026–2027 winter season, which will increase capacity and diversify itineraries in the region. This move builds upon nearly thirty years of operation in Polynesian waters with the Paul Gauguin, which will continue to be based in the area.

The introduction of the Le Jacques Cartier will complement the longstanding presence of the Paul Gauguin, with both vessels designed to target different market segments. Paul Gauguin has been specifically crafted to navigate shallow lagoons and will remain the principal cruise ship in French Polynesia. It is set to operate 66 departures during the 2026–2027 season, with 165 staterooms and suites, and will primarily cover the Society Islands, Tuamotu, and Marquesas, while also offering select itineraries extending to the Cook Islands, Fiji, and Tonga.

On the other hand, Le Jacques Cartier will serve as an expedition vessel, offering unique experiences to more remote and lesser-visited archipelagos. It will have nine departures and accommodate guests in 92 staterooms and suites, focusing on itineraries through the Tuamotu, Marquesas, Austral, Gambier, and Pitcairn Islands. A highlight of Le Jacques Cartier’s offerings will be three new “Discovery” itineraries, available for combination into an extensive 42-night cruise covering six archipelagos and 23 islands.

The routes were developed following a reconnaissance mission led by José Sarica, the expedition experience director, who coordinated with local communities to establish shore programs. This initiative will introduce six new ports and feature activities such as cultural welcomes and artisan workshops, including visits to traditional marae—the sacred sites of the region.

Operationally, each vessel will showcase a distinct onboard and ashore experience. Paul Gauguin will continue its cultural offerings with Tahitian hosts and optional excursions supported by a PADI-certified dive team. In contrast, Le Jacques Cartier will adopt a structured expedition format, providing one guided activity per guest daily, led by local specialists and utilizing tenders, local crafts, and zodiac boats for shore access.
