Ponant to Launch Two New Cruise Ships in French Polynesia for 2026-2027 Season
Ponant Explorations Group is set to enhance its foothold in French Polynesia during the 2026-2027 winter season by deploying two cruise ships, significantly boosting the region’s capacity and itinerary options.
The company has had nearly three decades of operations in Polynesian waters with the Paul Gauguin and will now introduce Le Jacques Cartier alongside this established vessel. The inclusion of these two vessels will allow Ponant to cater to different market segments, with each ship presenting a unique experience onboard and ashore.
Paul Gauguin, specifically designed for shallow lagoon navigation and remaining stationed in French Polynesia, will continue to operate as the region’s primary cruise ship. It is expected to make 66 sailings in the 2026-2027 season, accommodating guests in its 165 staterooms and suites. Its voyages will primarily explore the Society Islands, Tuamotu, and Marquesas, while select itineraries will reach the Cook Islands, Fiji, and Tonga.
In contrast, Le Jacques Cartier will focus on expedition cruising to lesser-known and remote islands, with plans for nine departures featuring 92 staterooms and suites. The ship’s itineraries will encompass the Tuamotu, Marquesas, Austral, Gambier, and Pitcairn Islands. Notably, it will introduce three new “Discovery” itineraries, which can be combined into one extensive voyage lasting 42 nights, covering six archipelagos and 23 islands.
The designing of these new routes involved detailed reconnaissance by expedition experience director José Sarica, who worked to establish shore programs in collaboration with local communities, resulting in the addition of six new ports in the Austral and Tuamotu Islands. Planned excursions for guests include cultural experiences, artisan workshops, and visits to traditional marae, which are sacred sites in the region.
Operationally, the two ships will operate under different concepts onboard and during shore excursions. Paul Gauguin will maintain its cultural framework, complete with Tahitian hosts and optional shore excursions, while Le Jacques Cartier will adopt a structured expedition model, offering guests a guided activity each day led by local experts. Access to shore will utilize tenders, local crafts, and zodiac boats.
