MSC Cruises Sets Sail from La Romana, Dominican Republic: What to Expect on Your Voyage
At the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR) held in Madrid, MSC Cruises revealed plans to enhance their maritime activities starting November 2026 from the port of La Romana in the Dominican Republic. This initiative signifies the cruise line’s first year-round deployment in the Southern Caribbean.
Joined by the Minister of Tourism for the Dominican Republic, David Collado, MSC emphasized their sustained commitment by basing the MSC Opera at La Romana. The ship will offer weekly voyages, available as 7-night trips or as part of a 14-night "butterfly" cruise, allowing for a combination of itineraries. The inaugural sailing is slated for November 16, 2026, with full details available on the cruise line’s website.
The new schedule includes regular visits to Catalina Island, a renowned destination featuring beautiful beaches and opportunities for exploration, such as observing vibrant coral formations. With multiple international airports serving the Dominican Republic, this program is projected to draw around 120,000 international visitors to La Romana each year, consequently boosting local hotels and businesses.
Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises, noted the company’s first call at Dominican ports in 2014 and heralded the transition to year-round operations in La Romana as a pivotal step forward, promising extended cruise seasons and economic uplift for local communities.
The MSC Opera’s itinerary will showcase La Romana, known for its coastal beauty and cultural sites, while also visiting other southern Caribbean ports like Fort-de-France in Martinique, Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, and St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda, all rich in maritime and coastal features unique to their respective islands.
