Meyer Turku Begins Construction on Royal Caribbean’s Fifth Icon-Class Cruise Ship
At the Meyer Turku yard in Turku, Finland, the construction of Royal Caribbean International’s fifth ICON-class cruise ship has officially begun. This event was commemorated by the ceremonial cutting of the first steel on January 19, 2026, featuring representatives from Royal Caribbean, the shipyard, and the classification society.
This new ship, temporarily referred to as ICON 5, is expected to be delivered in the summer of 2028. It continues the legacy of the ICON class, which is recognized for its considerable size within the global cruise fleet. The yard is also engaged in constructing the third and fourth vessels in this class, with the Legend OTS scheduled for service this summer and Hero OTS set for a 2027 delivery.
Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku have a long-standing collaboration, which includes provisions for additional ships in this series beyond ICON 5. The beginning of steel work indicates over two years of effort by countless technicians and designers to shape the new vessel. The official name and detailed specifications will be unveiled in due time.
Once complete, ICON 5 will further establish the ICON class as one of the largest collections of passenger vessels in operation, showcasing the ongoing partnership between Royal Caribbean and Finland’s shipbuilding industry.
