MSC Cruises Sets Sail from La Romana, Dominican Republic: What to Expect

In the bustling atmosphere of FITUR, the International Tourism Trade Fair in Madrid, MSC Cruises unveiled plans for a long-term maritime presence at La Romana, a homeport in the Dominican Republic, set to commence in November 2026.

Accompanied by the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado, MSC announced its commitment to homeport a vessel there, marking the establishment of the first year-round operation in the Southern Caribbean for the cruise line.

The cruise ship assigned to this initiative is the MSC Opera, which will offer a new weekly itinerary that can be booked as a 7-night round trip or integrated into a consecutive 14-night itinerary often referred to as a "butterfly" cruise.

Bookings are now open, with the inaugural sailing scheduled for November 16th, 2026. The itinerary, detailed on the cruise line’s official website, also includes a regular stop at Catalina Island, known for its stunning natural beauty, white sandy beaches, and vibrant coral reef ecosystems.

With multiple international airports facilitating access to the Dominican Republic, this service is projected to bring around 120,000 international tourists to La Romana annually, boosting local hospitality, dining, and commercial sectors.

Gianni Onorato, MSC’s CEO, highlighted that the line first visited Dominican ports in 2014, and the move to year-round operations from La Romana represents a notable step forward, extending the traditional cruising season while benefiting the local economy through increased visitor traffic.

This new program will also feature additional southern Caribbean ports, including Fort-de-France in Martinique, Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, and St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda, each offering unique maritime and coastal experiences emblematic of the Caribbean region.
