Surge in Chinese Cruise Ship Visits to Busan: The Impact of Visa Waiver政策

Cruise operations involving Chinese-flag and China-based vessels are set to surge at South Korea’s Port of Busan in 2026, following a temporary visa exemption for Chinese tourists. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has reported that 173 cruise calls from China are projected for the year, a stark increase from just eight in the previous year. This change is expected to bring more than 800,000 passengers to Busan, making it one of the strongest cruise seasons on record for the port.

This increase is a direct result of the South Korean government lifting visa requirements for organized groups of Chinese nationals for nine months. Under this new policy, groups of three or more can enter without a visa for stays up to 15 days, aiming to boost inbound tourism.

To accommodate the influx of cruise traffic, the Ministry convened a meeting with relevant authorities to address necessary operational and infrastructure enhancements. Discussions during the meeting focused on optimizing immigration procedures and enhancing passenger processing capabilities to manage the anticipated higher arrival volumes effectively.
