Arrecife Secured as MSC Cruises’ Home Port Until 2028
MSC Cruises has officially confirmed that the port of Arrecife, located on the island of Lanzarote, will serve as its home port through at least 2028. This agreement was reached during discussions at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, involving local officials and Fernando Pacheco, MSC Cruises’ General Manager for Spain. Pacheco emphasized that Arrecife is a strategically important maritime hub, providing excellent visitor experiences.
Starting in 2026, MSC plans to increase its operations from Arrecife by deploying larger ships with a capacity exceeding 4,400 passengers per sailing, up from the previous capacity of approximately 3,700. These vessels will provide various routes throughout the Canary Islands, and MSC Cruises has already scheduled itineraries for 2028 linking Arrecife with ports including Rome. The Spanish cruise program for 2028 anticipates over 600 cruise calls at domestic ports, with Arrecife remaining a key homeport.
Officials in Arrecife noted a surge in cruise activity, projecting 170 ship calls between January and April 2026. They attributed this growth to the port’s strategic location near major North African and Iberian harbors, its modern cruise terminal infrastructure, and its favorable climate, which attracts cruise operators to the Canary Islands during the northern winter months.
This extension of MSC’s homeport at Arrecife aligns with a broader trend of expanding cruise infrastructure in the region, as recent investments in terminal and passenger handling facilities aim to support the increasing traffic and operational needs of large cruise ships visiting the Canary Islands.
