MSC Cruises Sets Sail from La Romana: A New Cruise Experience in the Dominican Republic

In January 2026, MSC Cruises made a significant announcement during the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR) in Madrid. The cruise line revealed plans to establish a permanent maritime presence from La Romana, Dominican Republic, starting November 2026. This move is notable as it marks MSC’s first year-round deployment in the Southern Caribbean.

During this unveiling, MSC was joined by David Collado, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism, as they confirmed a long-term commitment to operate a vessel from La Romana. The cruise ship chosen for this endeavor is the MSC Opera, which will follow a new weekly voyage structure. Passengers can book 7-night roundtrips or consecutive 14-night itineraries, also referred to as "butterfly" cruises within the industry.

Bookings for these voyages have already begun, with the inaugural sailing set for November 16, 2026. Itinerary details can be found on the cruise line’s official website. The new weekly schedule will include regular stops at Catalina Island, known for its breathtaking natural scenery, white sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters, making it ideal for both relaxation and exploration of its coral reefs.

This initiative will not only serve as a gateway for approximately 120,000 international tourists annually but is expected to generate increased activity in local hotels, restaurants, and businesses due to related tourist traffic. Gianni Onorato, MSC’s CEO, highlighted that the cruise line first visited the Dominican ports in 2014, and this expanded operation promises significant economic benefits to the local community by extending the traditional cruise season.

The MSC Opera’s new route will include La Romana, noted for its coastal beauty and cultural heritage. Additionally, it will make stops at other southern Caribbean destinations such as Fort-de-France in Martinique, Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, and St John’s in Antigua and Barbuda, each rich in maritime and coastal attractions typical of the region’s islands.
