Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas Returns to Port Due to Propulsion Issues
Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, a Quantum-class cruise ship, has been forced to return to port due to a technical fault in its propulsion system. This issue emerged during its latest voyage, leading to the cancellation of the ship’s upcoming 10-night cruise scheduled to depart from Sydney, New Zealand, on January 27, 2026.
Guests onboard reported experiencing a loss of propulsion, with the ship temporarily halting in open water before proceeding at a reduced speed towards Sydney, where it is expected to arrive later in the afternoon. Royal Caribbean clarified that the propulsion problem is associated with the ship’s electrically driven azipod units, necessitating a complete halt in service for proper repairs.
The Anthem of the Seas, which can accommodate nearly 4,905 passengers and has a gross tonnage of 168,666, will not start any new voyages until the necessary maintenance has been completed. The company has announced that passengers affected by the cancellation will receive full refunds, including reimbursement for taxes, fees, pre-purchased packages, and gratuities. Additionally, affected guests will be entitled to a future cruise credit and reimbursements for some travel expenses not eligible for refunds via other channels.
This decision aligns with maritime standards, which dictate that crucial propulsion repairs must be conducted on land rather than at sea.
