Dramatic Rescue: US Coast Guard Saves Cruise Ship Trapped in Antarctic Ice
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) recently undertook a daring rescue operation for the luxury cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II, which found itself trapped in ice near Antarctica. The incident occurred on January 17, just after 11 PM local time, when the Australian-owned vessel became immobilized in the Southern Ocean, approximately eight miles from McMurdo Sound.
Footage from TMX showcased the USCG Cutter Polar Star as it maneuvered through the frigid waters, breaking the ice that encased the cruise ship. Despite the treacherous conditions, the cutter completed two close passes to liberate the Scenic Eclipse II from the thick ice.
Once a clear path was created, the cruise ship managed to back out of the ice, allowing for its eventual escape. Following the USCG vessel, the Scenic Eclipse II traveled around four miles to reach open water, successfully concluding a tense situation.
The Scenic Eclipse II boasts cutting-edge amenities and is designed for exploration in polar regions, accommodating up to 228 guests. The successful rescue coincidentally marked the 50th anniversary of the Polar Star being commissioned, underscoring its vital role in maintaining U.S. presence in polar territories. The Polar Star has a storied history, carrying out critical missions for Operation Deep Freeze, including resupplying Antarctic research stations, breaking ice for essential deliveries, and engaging in search and rescue efforts.
Cmdr. Samuel Blase, executive officer of the Polar Star, emphasized the vessel’s capabilities, noting its status as the world’s most effective non-nuclear icebreaker. Blase affirmed that the Polar Star will continue to operate in high latitudes for many years to come.
