Liberty’s Pricing Hike in the Caribbean: Analyzing Increased Capacity and Costs
Jason Liberty, the chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, recently announced that pricing for Caribbean cruises has increased, despite a significant rise in capacity in the region. This trend has been observed across all three brands under the Royal Caribbean Group—Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea.
During the year-end and fourth quarter earnings call, Liberty indicated a robust demand for Caribbean voyages, stating, "We’re seeing high demand wanting to go to the Caribbean. We’re not only seeing good volume, but our pricing is higher in the Caribbean than it was last year.” He expressed confidence in the company’s ability to achieve positive yield growth for key markets, including the Caribbean, which he attributed to ongoing investments that distinguish Royal Caribbean Group from its competitors.
Liberty did acknowledge that the current landscape might not align with the expectations of some market observers; however, he emphasized the company’s strength in maintaining strong demand for both Caribbean cruises and their overall offerings. He noted that the company’s capacity for the Caribbean had increased by 6.7% year-over-year, driven by the introduction of the new Legend of the Seas this summer, alongside the full-year operations of the Star of the Seas and Celebrity Xcel.
