Maritime traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar experienced significant disruptions on February 7th due to Storm Marta, which brought strong winds and rough seas, making ferry operations unsafe. This led to the suspension of services between mainland Spain and North African ports, specifically in Morocco and Ceuta.
Spanish port officials confirmed that all sailings from Algeciras to Morocco’s Tanger Med were cancelled after the Moroccan port closed for safety reasons. Consequently, passenger access to the quay was halted, and freight truck movements to Tanger Med were also restricted.
Similarly, the Tarifa port halted its ferry link with Tangier City as sea conditions worsened. On the Algeciras–Ceuta route, high-speed crossings faced early cancellations, and attempts to resume operations were ultimately abandoned for the day. Although one operator continued to maintain scheduled rotations when possible, other services were suspended as the adverse weather persisted.
This interruption followed a brief resumption of services earlier in the week after prior disruptions caused by Storm Leonardo. Meteorological agencies in Spain and Morocco had warned about heavy rainfall and winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h and waves building to about four meters, directly impacting ferry operations and transport systems.
Authorities recommended that travelers and maritime operators monitor updates regarding ferry services, as further cancellations were anticipated due to the ongoing storm conditions.
