Historic Moment: Keel of Oceania Sonata Laid at Fincantieri Yard in Marghera

At the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy, a significant milestone was reached with the formal laying of the keel for Oceania Sonata, an important step in the ship’s construction process. The keel laying ceremony was attended by representatives from Oceania Cruises, its parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and senior management from Fincantieri, underscoring the collaborative spirit essential to the project.

This ceremony is steeped in maritime tradition, celebrating the collective technical efforts of naval architects, engineers, designers, and shipyard craftspeople who have brought the project to its current stage. Oceania’s leadership described the event as a significant affirmation of their strategic fleet expansion and operational growth within the cruise industry.

Fincantieri management highlighted that the construction of Oceania Sonata builds on the knowledge and skills gained from previous vessel constructions for Oceania Cruises, showcasing the ongoing partnership that enhances shipbuilding standards and vessel outfitting.

Scheduled to make her maiden voyage in August 2027, Oceania Sonata will be the ninth ship in Oceania’s fleet, with plans for three additional sister ships: Oceania Arietta in 2029, and two more set for delivery in 2032 and 2035. These ships will each have a gross tonnage of around 86,000 GT and accommodate up to 1,390 passengers, one-third of whom will be in suite categories, including two-bedroom Owner’s Suites, the new Horizon Suites, and Penthouse Deluxe Suites.

Oceania Sonata will feature nine restaurants, such as the Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei Kitchen and the French La Table. This keel laying marks a key moment in the construction timeline, aligned with Oceania’s plans to deploy the ship successfully into its fleet.
