Storm Marta Forces Suspension of Ferry Services in the Strait of Gibraltar
Maritime traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar faced significant disruptions on February 7th due to Storm Marta, which brought strong winds and rough seas. This inclement weather forced authorities to suspend ferry operations connecting mainland Spain with North African ports, specifically Morocco and Ceuta.
Notably, all ferry sailings from Algeciras to Morocco’s Tanger Med were canceled after the Moroccan port declared a closure for safety reasons. As a result, passenger access to the quay in Algeciras was completely halted, and freight truck movements to Tanger Med were also restricted. Meanwhile, the Tarifa port also ceased its ferry services to Tangier City amid the worsening sea conditions.
On the crucial Algeciras–Ceuta route, operators canceled high-speed crossings in the early morning hours, and despite initial attempts to recommence services, all subsequent departures were ultimately scrapped for the day due to the ongoing poor weather. One ferry operator even withdrew its afternoon sailings due to the hazardous maritime environment. However, one operator managed to continue its scheduled crossings, though only when conditions allowed.
This disruption follows a brief period earlier in the week when ferry services had resumed after previous disturbances caused by Storm Leonardo. Meteorological warnings from both Spanish and Moroccan services highlighted the severe conditions, predicting heavy rainfall, strong winds potentially reaching 80 km/h, and waves reaching around four meters in height.
Authorities recommended that travelers and mariners check for updates from ferry operators prior to heading to terminals, as additional cancellations were anticipated due to the impacts of the storm system continuing in the strait.
