Tragic Incident: Passenger Falls Overboard from Costa Smeralda in Civitavecchia
In the early afternoon of February 6, 2026, an incident occurred at Civitavecchia Port involving a passenger who fell overboard from the Costa Smeralda cruise ship. The vessel was docked at Pier 12 and was engaged in routine operations when a middle-aged German national fell a significant distance onto the pier.
Initial investigations by port police and the Coast Guard indicated that the fall might have been a deliberate act, though formal inquiries are still ongoing. Emergency services, including firefighters who were already on-site for a separate medical evacuation, began resuscitation efforts alongside the ship’s medical team. Unfortunately, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
