Unveiling the Future: Completion of Meyer Turku’s AVATAR Net-Zero Cruise Ship Concept
The Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku has successfully developed the AVATAR project, a pioneering net-zero cruise ship concept. This innovative design marks a significant advancement in the cruise industry, aiming to achieve a lifecycle carbon footprint reduction of over 90% compared to standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
AVATAR emerged from the NEcOLEAP initiative, a four-year research and development program co-funded by Business Finland, which brought together experts in maritime and technology sectors. The project’s outcomes provide a framework for sustainable shipbuilding and can serve as a reference for future designs expected to implement emission-reducing technologies by around 2030.
While focusing on practical technologies proven effective in energy consumption reduction, the project’s developers excluded early-stage experimental technologies from the concept. Remarkably, the AVATAR project exceeded its carbon reduction targets significantly.
A core aspect of the design is minimizing energy usage across the ship’s systems. To analyze how various design elements impact energy consumption, a digital twin was created as part of a dynamic simulation model. This involved assessing structural streamlining, using lightweight materials, and enhancing onboard systems such as air-handling units, which have been found to cut heating and cooling demands for cabins by about 50% compared to conventional designs.
Additionally, the AVATAR concept incorporates transitional fuels and auxiliary energy sources, with bio-methanol selected as the main fuel due to its promising lifecycle availability and performance enhancements. Wind-assisted propulsion and solar energy capture are also part of the design, alongside a focus on sustainable materials and space efficiency to further reduce the overall emissions throughout the ship’s lifespan.
Meyer Turku’s leadership indicates that the insights gained from the AVATAR project will inform their ongoing shipbuilding practices and stimulates advancements across the maritime industry rather than existing as an isolated study.
