Seabourn Cancels Expedition Submarine Program: What It Means for Future Voyages

In a recent strategic move, Seabourn announced the discontinuation of its expedition submarine program as the current Antarctic season comes to a close. The phase-out will occur over the next six weeks and will not extend beyond this season.

This decision impacts the specially designed submersibles utilized onboard Seabourn Venture and its sister ship Seabourn Pursuit, both of which were equipped for submarine operations since their launches in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The company explained that low guest engagement with the submarine experience was a primary factor in this decision, as it affected the program’s operational viability. Furthermore, the maintenance and recertification processes for the specialized equipment required considerable technical resources, making sustainability a challenge for the program. Additionally, evolving regulatory requirements in certain operational regions limited the areas and conditions for submarine activities, reducing deployment options.

Seabourn’s expedition offerings remain robust, featuring various optional activities that allow guests to connect with remote environments, including Zodiac excursions, sea kayaking, and guided hikes. The withdrawal of the submersibles will not affect these core experiences, which will continue as part of the "Ventures by Seabourn" program.

Travel advisors with clients who had booked submarine dives have been informed to discuss alternative options or refunds, following standard procedures for canceled excursions. Both the Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit will continue to provide immersive experiences in polar and remote regions, as both ships are constructed to Polar Class standards and supported by expert expedition teams.
