Cruise Lines Adjust Itineraries Amid Growing Security Concerns in Mexico
Major cruise lines in the United States have altered their itineraries along the Mexican coast due to escalating violence following the death of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho." His recent killing during a military operation sparked widespread unrest, leading to immediate clashes in several Mexican states and reports of road blockades and increasing security actions.
In particular, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings announced that the Norwegian Bliss, with a capacity for 4,000 passengers, would skip its scheduled stop in Puerto Vallarta. The company advised that any additional itinerary changes for vessels heading to Mexican ports would be communicated directly to passengers onboard.
Similarly, Carnival Corporation’s Royal Princess also omitted Puerto Vallarta from its schedule, extending its stay in Cabo San Lucas and heading on to Mazatlán. A ship under Holland America Line’s umbrella has chosen to spend its time at sea rather than visit the Mexican Riviera.
While Royal Caribbean Group reported no immediate changes to its published sailings, it pledged to keep guests and travel agents informed should conditions dictate adjustments.
These operational changes coincide with broader impacts on travel in the region, with airlines suspending or canceling flights to both Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara in response to heightened security risks and advisories from various foreign governments.
