Cruise Companies Adjust Itineraries Amid Rising Security Concerns in Mexico
Major cruise lines based in the United States are altering their itineraries in Mexican waters due to heightened security concerns following the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho," during a military operation. This pivotal event has led to a series of violent clashes and increased security measures throughout various regions in Mexico.
In response to the unrest, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings announced that the Norwegian Bliss, a vessel with a capacity of 4,000 passengers, will skip its scheduled stop at Puerto Vallarta. The company stated that any further itinerary changes would be communicated to passengers currently aboard.
Similarly, Carnival Corporation’s Royal Princess has opted to bypass Puerto Vallarta, instead extending its visit to Cabo San Lucas before heading towards Mazatlán. A related ship from Holland America Line altered its plans by taking a day at sea instead of docking at a Mexican port.
While Royal Caribbean Group hasn’t made any current changes to its published itineraries, they indicated that updates would be provided to guests and travel agents if conditions required adjustments.
These alterations are part of a broader trend, as numerous airlines have also suspended or canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, reflecting ongoing security advisories issued by various governments regarding travel to the region.
