Interpol Tracks Down Fugitive Former NCL Officer Amid Major Fraud Investigation
A significant case of fraud involving a former cruise line executive has unfolded, leading to international legal actions. Thomas Markell, the former Senior Director of Events for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), was arrested in Buenos Aires under a U.S. federal warrant. Authorities allege that Markell was part of a scheme that caused over $2 million in financial losses to the company.
The investigation reveals that from mid-2021 to late 2023, Markell misused his position to approve fraudulent payments disguised as legitimate business expenses. This involved submitting invoices from fictitious vendors linked to the fraud, with some individual payments reaching amounts as high as $165,921. Furthermore, it is alleged that Markell created a sham production services company to facilitate this fraudulent billing and funneled the proceeds to accounts belonging to associates, including a notable transfer of $82,000 to his girlfriend’s account.
Markell faces multiple charges in U.S. federal court, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, and aggravated identity theft. His indictment includes at least seven counts of wire fraud and associated identity theft offenses, each carrying severe penalties upon conviction.
Following his departure from the U.S. while under investigation, Markell became the subject of an international manhunt that ended with his detention in Argentina. He is currently awaiting extradition to face the charges in the United States.
