Regal Princess Ship Successfully Rescues Stranded Individuals Off the Yucatán Coast
During the night of February 23, 2026, the cruise ship Regal Princess, operated by Princess Cruises, altered its course to assist a small sailing craft in distress approximately 150 nautical miles north-northeast of Progreso, located on the Yucatán Peninsula.
The Regal Princess was on a scheduled 7-night voyage headed for Cozumel, Mexico, after leaving Galveston, Texas. While en route, the crew spotted a makeshift vessel, which was taking on water and appeared to be in a dire situation. Its occupants were struggling to manually remove water from the deteriorating craft when the larger ship approached to provide assistance, as mandated by maritime law.
The Regal Princess reversed direction and successfully brought the individuals aboard. The small vessel was noted to have been structurally compromised, largely made of metal and wood, with a makeshift canvas sail that had failed before the rescue. Although there were varying reports regarding the number of people rescued, they were given the necessary aid once aboard the cruise ship.
This operation was carried out in international waters and did not disrupt the ship’s planned itinerary, including a scheduled overnight stay in Cozumel on February 24.
