Scenic Group Celebrates 40 Years with Exciting Expanded Fleet Programme

Scenic Group is celebrating four decades of operations since its establishment in 1986 in Newcastle, NSW. Initially founded as a domestic coach tour company by Glen Moroney, it has grown into a global luxury river, yacht, and touring operator.

To mark this milestone, the company announced an ambitious expansion plan during their annual Night of Stars event in Sydney. The General Manager Sales and Marketing for Australia and Asia Pacific shared that the fleet would continue to grow beyond current commitments, reinforcing the company’s forward momentum and future directions.

The Scenic Group revolutionized the European river cruise market by introducing balcony-equipped river vessels and has since expanded into expedition cruising with the luxury discovery yacht sector. Their plans include construction of several new vessels, such as the superyacht Emerald Kaia, riverboats Emerald Astra and Emerald Lumi, and a new class of discovery yacht named Scenic Ikon. These vessels are being built at company-managed shipyards in Vietnam and Croatia, ensuring quality and operational standards are maintained.

Significant growth in their distribution network has also been noted, with the number of travel agencies generating substantial revenue through Scenic products rising dramatically from three to fifty-nine over the past decade. As travel demand rebounds, clients are increasingly interested in longer journeys and combining various product offerings.

Currently employing over 7,000 staff globally, Scenic Group operates or has vessels under construction across its various brands, including Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Emerald Cruises. Their fleet features a mix of European river ships, Southeast Asian river vessels, and expedition yachts. Future expansions for Emerald Cruises include broadening their river network to the Seine by 2027 and reintroducing land-based tours in select destinations.

The company’s approach combines ship design, construction, and commercial management under one organizational structure, allowing for effective control and adaptability in meeting market demands. As Scenic Group steps into its fifth decade, its focus remains on fleet investment, product diversification, and premium travel experiences across a variety of waterways.
