Cruise Lines Reroute Ships Amid Evolving Security Concerns in Mexico
Major cruise lines based in the United States have recently altered their ship itineraries along the Mexican coast due to a spike in unrest following the killing of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho.” This military operation led to widespread violence and confrontations in various Mexican states, resulting in road blockades and heightened security measures.
In response, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings announced that the Norwegian Bliss, which accommodates up to 4,000 passengers, would skip its scheduled stop at Puerto Vallarta. Norwegian indicated that any further changes to itineraries involving ships heading to Mexican ports would be directly communicated to passengers on board.
Carnival Corporation also adjusted its plans, with the Royal Princess bypassing Puerto Vallarta to extend its visit to Cabo San Lucas before heading to Mazatlán. A sister ship from Holland America Line opted for a day at sea instead of visiting the Mexican Riviera.
Royal Caribbean Group has maintained its published itineraries for now, but they have committed to informing guests and travel agents should the situation necessitate changes.
These adjustments come amid broader travel disruptions, with numerous airlines suspending or canceling flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara due to safety concerns and travel warnings issued by various foreign governments.
