Carnival Celebration: Heroic Response to Distressed Small Boat en Route to Cozumel
During a recent Western Caribbean cruise, the Carnival Celebration took swift action in response to a small boat in distress while heading to Cozumel, Mexico. On February 16th, the crew spotted the vessel in international waters and promptly altered their course to assist.
Following maritime protocols, the crew conducted a successful rescue operation, bringing five individuals aboard. In this effort, they coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard, who provided necessary guidance throughout the process. The identities of those rescued, as well as the specifics regarding the boat’s distress, were not disclosed; however, witnesses reported that the small craft was in poor condition and taking on water, necessitating urgent intervention.
The Carnival Celebration had embarked from Miami on February 15th for a 7-day itinerary, which included stops at Roatan Island in Honduras and Carnival’s private destination in the Bahamas, Celebration Key, before returning to Miami on February 22nd.
This incident underscores the obligations outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which mandates that vessel captains assist persons in peril at sea, provided it does not jeopardize their own ship or crew.
