Interpol Tracks Down Fugitive Ex-NCL Officer Amidst Major Fraud Investigation
A significant investigation linked to a major cruise line has escalated into an international manhunt. Thomas Markell, the former Senior Director of Events for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) based in Miami, has been apprehended in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His arrest stemmed from an outstanding federal court warrant in the United States, related to a suspected fraud scheme that allegedly caused over $2 million in losses for the company.
Law enforcement, aided by Interpol and Argentine authorities, apprehended Markell, who is now awaiting extradition to the U.S. Prosecutors allege that during his time at NCL, Markell authorized a series of fraudulent invoices purportedly from vendors involved in the scheme. These invoices were cleverly disguised as legitimate business expenses, allowing substantial funds to be transferred without drawing immediate attention.
Between mid-2021 and late 2023, investigators identified disbursements that reached up to $165,921, among various other transfers funneled through third-party accounts. Furthermore, it is claimed that Markell’s actions included establishing a fictitious production services company to facilitate the fraudulent transactions, with funds even directed to personal accounts connected to acquaintances, including $82,000 to an account held by his girlfriend.
In the U.S. federal indictment, Markell faces multiple charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, and aggravated identity theft, with each wire fraud count potentially leading to serious penalties upon conviction. His departure from the U.S. during the investigation prompted an international search, culminating in his detention in Argentina, where he remains while the extradition process unfolds.
