New Era for Taranto Port: Agreement Signed for State-of-the-Art Cruise Terminal
On February 20, 2026, an agreement was formalized in Taranto, Italy, between the port authority and Global Ports Holding Plc (GPH), which operates cruise facilities. This agreement authorizes the construction of a new terminal at the Ionian port dedicated to cruise ship passengers. The signing took place at the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea, where the Chief Operating Officer of GPH and the President of the Port Authority documented their commitment to the project.
Construction is set to begin in October 2026, following the end of the current cruise season, with an expected completion date in March 2027 to prepare for the upcoming 2027 season. The project involves a significant investment of over EUR 4.5 million for a facility covering approximately 2,250 square meters (24,220 square feet) situated on the western quay of San Cataldo pier, the main cruise ship berth.
The new terminal will feature expanded spaces for embarkation and disembarkation, dedicated baggage handling areas, and retail zones showcasing local artisanal and gastronomic products for arriving passengers. Additionally, external areas will be designed to accommodate passenger vehicles and buses, enhancing connections to another quay for simultaneous vessel dockings.
Supporters of the project view the new terminal as a critical component in elevating the port’s position within international cruise networks and boosting Taranto’s attractiveness as a maritime tourism destination. It is anticipated to foster economic growth in both the port and the surrounding city, reinforcing Taranto’s image as an organized and welcoming cruise port.
