Carnival Cruise Ship Faces Delay Due to Unexpected Power Loss: What Happened?

Embarkation delays on the Carnival Sunshine were announced for guests boarding on March 1, 2026. The ship experienced an unexpected power loss early that morning as it returned to its homeport in Norfolk, Virginia, concluding an 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruise.

Due to the outage, embarkation has been delayed by approximately five hours. Carnival Cruise Line communicated to guests that the outage was resolved, and the ship is functioning normally. However, to comply with U.S. Coast Guard regulations, the ship requires assistance from tugboats for docking, leading to the unplanned delay.

As a result of the delay, guests who had scheduled earlier arrival times at the cruise terminal will experience significant disruptions. For those who originally chose a 10-10:30 a.m. slot, they are now advised to arrive between 3-3:30 p.m., while later slots will see proportionately less impact.

To ensure a smooth process, Carnival is urging all guests to arrive no later than 6:30 p.m. or risk being denied boarding entirely. In recognition of the inconvenience, Carnival announced that each guest will receive a $25 onboard credit to use for lunch while they wait.

The late embarkation will also likely affect dinner plans. Both main dining rooms will operate under open seating, and the Lido Marketplace buffet will remain open for guests.

Moreover, Carnival has prepared guests for potential changes to their itinerary, acknowledging that the delayed departure might necessitate adjustments to port visits or timing. The Carnival Sunshine is set to embark on a 6-night Bahamas cruise, stopping at Celebration Key, Nassau, and Bimini.

While Carnival has not released specific details about the power outage, reports from guests indicated that power and propulsion were lost around 1:55 a.m., with power restored shortly after 2:45 a.m. The ship was able to dock with its own power, although assistance was on standby to prevent any risk to the port using standard safety protocols.
