CCL-Carnival Drops Puerto Vallarta from Mexican Riviera Itinerary Due to Security Issues

CCL-Carnival Cruise Line has decided to remove Puerto Vallarta from its Mexican Riviera itinerary due to recent security concerns connected to cartel violence in the region. Following the death of a cartel leader, unrest escalated, prompting the U.S. government to issue a travel advisory urging caution and heightening security alerts.

As a precautionary measure, the scheduled stop for the Carnival Panorama at Puerto Vallarta on February 28, 2026, was canceled. Instead, the ship either stayed at sea or visited alternative ports while Carnival assessed the situation on land. This suspension will continue for an unspecified duration, as the cruise line prioritizes safety.

Other cruise operators are following suit, bypassing Puerto Vallarta in light of the broader Security Level 2 advisory from the U.S. State Department affecting several areas in Mexico. Carnival and other lines have opted for alternative ports like Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán when possible.

While there is unrest in Puerto Vallarta, other destinations along the Mexican Pacific and Caribbean are operating as scheduled. The adjustments made by Carnival primarily impact the Gulf of California segments of affected voyages. Passengers have been notified via operational notices that excursions booked in Puerto Vallarta will either be refunded or adjusted according to the new routes.

Carnival, along with other cruise lines, remains vigilant and in communication with local authorities to determine when it can safely resume port calls in Puerto Vallarta.
