Norovirus Outbreak Confirmed on HAL’s MS Westerdam at Kai Tak Terminal

Epidemiological surveillance was launched by Hong Kong health authorities on March 1, 2026, after Holland America Line’s ship, MS Westerdam, docked at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Approximately 2,000 passengers and 800 crew members were onboard, with a significant number exhibiting symptoms consistent with acute gastroenteritis during the voyage, which had included stops in Japan, South Korea, and mainland China since mid-February.

The Centre for Health Protection reported 76 confirmed cases of gastrointestinal illness, characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Laboratory tests from a subset of affected individuals confirmed the presence of norovirus, a pathogen commonly responsible for outbreaks in confined settings, such as cruise ships.

Port health teams boarded the Westerdam around 4:00 AM local time following alerts from the ship’s medical staff. They promptly sought further details on the illnesses and began environmental and epidemiological assessments, including an inspection of food hygiene standards aboard the vessel.

To comply with public health protocols, authorities set up a temporary medical station at the terminal to screen disembarking passengers and monitor their health. Most reported cases were mild, with only a few individuals showing lingering symptoms; however, none required hospitalization.

After the disembarkation process and health assessments, the cruise operator implemented enhanced sanitation protocols, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting public areas in line with international health standards. The ship was permitted to resume its voyage later that day after health officials determined that onboard conditions met the required safety criteria.

Public health advice continues to stress the importance of proper personal and environmental hygiene to prevent the spread of norovirus, which typically spreads easily in close-contact environments. For more details on incidents involving MS Westerdam, visit its CruiseMinus page.
